A VIRTUAL REALITY OF

THE FUTURE OF COVID

The task was to become a designer as an author, focusing on three-dimensional that would tell the story to the audience. Graphic design is often considered in a two-dimensional way, but what happens when we turn it into something three-dimensional, a physical space, then bringing it to virtual reality? Will it change the meaning when portraying it through virtual reality which is a new form of technology for designers to use? After COVID-19 emerged, I was inspired to create the dystopian future based on COVID-19. The best approach is to tell a story through virtual reality to inspire the audience.

BRIEF

After researching artists, articles and films and how they would represent the dystopian future. I was inspired from outside of my room, shows the outside environment during the COVID-19 lockdown. The background shows the buildings; red lights, the windows have yellow hues and blues lights. I was inspired to use these colours of the lights and the colour of the sky. After taking the photos, I realised it’s good to have different inspirations from reality too.

PROCESS

I have been studying the three-dimensional of studio. I decided to use this to develop my skills for the Blender software to VR. This will help me to look at the shapes and colours. This led me to feel confident enough to build the objects in VR. If it is successful, then I will make virtual reality from my research of science-fiction (of a futuristic world).

I asked the audience opinion. They were impressed and they would like to see my own version of my futuristic world.

I decided to use my drawings from my first project, because I explored the minority buildings and did in-depth research. I then ‘destroyed’ the buildings by removing some bits to represent dystopia.

FINAL

I took the image of street lights and from there, I created different street lights to use in my dystopian future. I  asked the audience's opinion on design. From there, I chose the final design because it’s very similar to the ones we have in reality with my little design, to show the audience that we are not that far to the future. Furthermore, they are more recognizable.

The challenge was the limited equipment I had. It was disappointing as I wanted to show the high quality where people can look at my objects well. It was hard to get help from technicians as they won’t able to see me face-to-face or actually see what the problem is, which added pressure for me to solve the issues alone. However, I successfully made the project that is based on a dystopian future created by COVID’s emergence in the present day.
