A PRODUCT DESIGN OF

DESIGNING THE FUTURE

The task was to become a designer as an author. The work is two-dimensional, creating a defined space of interpretation. We have been told to make the project transform to three-dimensional. The question is 'What happens when the space to contemplate becomes three-dimensional, a physical space?', leading me to explore the buildings that represent the future. The result was I created a journey of sketching to product design of the futuristic buildings.

After researching behind scenes of classic sci-fi films, explaining how they developed the digital city and space-scapes with visualization artists explaining the concept and the works they did during those times. I decided to study the reality for the future by attending the exhibition Moving to Mars in the Design Museum, I was inspired by the concept of possibly living on Mars in the future. I decided to bring my research into the form of drawings, as I will show the vision of the future that I studied.

PROCESS

During my journey from university to home, I am surrounded by buildings. Some of the buildings have unique shapes that are slightly futuristic. These images are from Elephant and Castle to Stratford. This enabled me to create these shapes for my drawings.

AUDIENCE

The feedback from the tutors and students said my drawings are ‘quite phallic and powerful’.They would like to see my drawings become three-dimensional, a physical space that they can touch or hold. I asked the audience (young people, my peers and tutors)  to select some buildings that remind them of the future. From there, I have selected the final buildings in order to make vases.

The challenge was the printing because it was hard to find the right printer to print my design as it would not print my design fully due to complicated shapes. However, I found the different printer and it was a successful print.
